For Children of Portuguese

If you are the child of a Portuguese citizen, you can apply for Portuguese nationality. The process is straightforward if your father or mother holds original nationality, with no age restrictions. For children of Portuguese citizens with derivative nationality, the application is limited to minors and depends on additional requirements. Adopted children of Portuguese citizens may also qualify, provided they meet the current laws.

For Grandchildren of Portuguese

Grandchildren of Portuguese nationals can apply for citizenship if they prove their effective connection to the Portuguese community, including fluency in the Portuguese language, and have no serious criminal record or suspicions of involvement in terrorist activities.

For Great-Grandchildren of Portuguese

Citizenship for great-grandchildren is not directly provided for by law, but it is possible if one of the great-grandchild’s parents or grandparents obtained Portuguese nationality. This family chain allows the great-grandchild to apply for citizenship as the child or grandchild of a Portuguese national.

For Spouses or Partners of Portuguese

You can apply for Portuguese citizenship if you are married to or in a stable union with a Portuguese citizen for more than three years. The relationship must be recognized in Portugal, and you must demonstrate ties to the Portuguese community, such as proficiency in the language. After six years of relationship, these ties are automatically presumed.

By Length of Residence

Foreigners residing in Portugal for at least five years, who speak Portuguese and have no serious criminal convictions exceeding 3 years in prison or suspicions of involvement in terrorism, can apply for nationality by length of residence.
