Updated October 2026 · Legal review: Isadora Rizzi, lawyer (OAB/PR 75.878)

Since 2022, Brazil has had a specific visa for digital nomads: professionals who work remotely for companies or clients abroad. The rule is in National Immigration Council (CNIg) Normative Resolution No. 45/2021.

Who can apply?

Immigrants who, with no employment relationship with a Brazilian company, can work remotely for a foreign employer or with clients abroad.

What is the minimum income?

You must prove one of the following:

  • monthly income from foreign sources of at least US$ 1,500; or
  • available funds of at least US$ 18,000.

Which documents are required?

  • Valid passport.
  • Employment or service contract proving remote work for clients abroad.
  • Proof of income or funds.
  • Health insurance valid in Brazil.
  • Criminal record certificate.

Consular visa or residence in Brazil?

If you are outside Brazil, you apply for the temporary visa at a consulate. If you are already in the country, you can apply for the residence permit at the Federal Police. In both cases the initial term is up to 1 year, renewable for an equal period.

Do I have to pay taxes in Brazil?

Anyone who stays in Brazil for more than 183 days within 12 months may become a tax resident. It is worth planning the tax side before moving.
